5 Things You’ll Like in the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero Sport
The Montero Sport is one of Mitsubishi’s top-selling vehicles in the country. The current generation was launched in 2016. It did very well in terms of driving and comfort. It also looked very good in our opinion. Others don’t like it but we do. Towards the end of 2019, Mitsubishi gave it a mid-cycle refresh aimed to keep it fresh especially with updated also coming to its competition.
The changes were mostly on the outside with a more modern front fascia, new wheels, and revised taillights. Interior changes were very minimal. Under the hood, it still retains the same engine. With these changes in mind, what are the things you will like and why should you consider the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero Sport?
Exterior updates
The biggest change in the Mitsubishi Montero Sport has got to be the exterior. It adopts new slimmer LED headlights and large LED fog lights on the bumper. The grille is also an updated version of the company’s dynamic shield design. It actually gets its design from the Strada pick-up truck which it’s based on.
The taillights on the other hand also get an updated LED cluster which looks even better at night. What most people will love is how they removed the reflector below the taillights. Most of the criticism the pre-facelift version received were because of those. This is proof that Mitsubishi does listen to its customers and critics alike.
New Infotainment System
The interior of the Montero Sport was not heavily updated for this model-year. It does however get a new and better 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The head-unit itself is the same as what Mitsubishi uses for other vehicles in other international markets such as the Outlander.
It is also equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which are important features today. The system is overall great to use as it is fast in response and very easy to navigate.
New Digital Instrument Cluster
This is something that you usually find in more expensive luxury cars. GT variants of the updated Montero Sport get a digital instrument cluster. It shows various information such as fuel economy and your tire pressure monitoring system. You can also choose the layout of the speedometer and tachometer depending on which you prefer to be the main focal point of the screen.
Convenience Features
Mitsubishi was very thoughtful with this update. The power tailgate has a new kick to open and close function. In addition to the button on the key fob, and on the center stack in the dashboard, you can open the power tailgate simply by swinging your foot under either corner of the vehicle. This can be done both to open or close which will be helpful when your hands are full.
The Montero Sport also comes standard with smart keyless entry and push button start just like the pre-facelift version. This is for GLS and up variants.
The top-spec GT 4×4 variant also comes with a downloadable smartphone app called Mitsubishi Remote Control. This lets you control various functions such as opening and closing the tailgate, starting the engine, and turning on or off the hazard lights. It also shows different information about the vehicle, and has a car finder feature which will help in finding your Montero Sport in a crowded parking lot.
On-Road Performance and Comfort
The pre-facelift Montero Sport was already a great performing SUV. The 2.4-liter MIVEC turbodiesel engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission has always been a good engine. Acceleration is perfect for both city and highway driving. It is also has the right amount of power and torque for overtaking and going up steep inclines. Steering is also very smooth and responsive with lots of feedback. Fuel consumption is also good with us getting an average of 14 km/l while driving between Davao City and Mati, through a mix of city streets, provincial highways, and uphill and downhill twisty roads.
As for ride quality and comfort, the Montero Sport does not disappoint at all. It’s also one of the best in its segment for sure. That was also improved in the updated version with a more balanced ride whether in front or in the back.
With all that out of the way, we’re sure that the Mitsubishi Montero Sport is definitely on your mid-size SUV shopping list. Why shouldn’t it be when it performs so well. Be sure to check it out and experience it yourself because you might just love it right away.
