The Ford Ranger Raptor is the pick-up truck you want

It is more than just an aesthetically upgraded Ford Ranger.

Everybody knows what it means to see a Ford with the huge black grille spelling out F-O-R-D. No it’s not a cheap accessory trying-hard grille you buy in Banawe. This is legit. It’s the Ford Ranger Raptor.

The Ford F-150 Raptor is very well known for its styling and performance. It’s basically a low monster truck. Many Filipinos wanted it but sadly it’s only available through grey market importers and with a hefty asking price too. Thankfully, Ford listened to the clamor and introduced the Ranger Raptor in 2018.

It’s not just aesthetics, it comes with various upgraded to the exterior, suspension, and interior. It also introduced Ford’s new 2.0-liter Bi-turbo diesel engine.

Unfortunately we don’t have the luxury to do a comprehensive review due to enhanced community quarantine. We do have experience with the Ford Ranger Raptor so let’s make a review out of that.

The Engine

The initial launch of the Ford Ranger Raptor in 2018 also saw the launch of a new engine by Ford. The Ranger Raptor is powered by a 2.0-liter Inline-4 Bi-turbo diesel engine. Maximum output is 210 horsepower at 3,750 RPM. Maximum torque is 1,750 Newton-meters at 1,750 RPM. It is paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

More on the driving experience later.

Tough Exterior Looks

One of the main reasons why buyers would opt for the Ranger Raptor instead of other pick-ups and even other Ranger variants is the tougher exterior looks.

The front grille which spells out F-O-R-D is a Raptor signature trait. Add the front and rear bumpers, and 17-inch blacked out alloy wheels on 33-inch all-terrain tires, and the wider fenders, you have a truck that looks like it’s ready to be driven anywhere.

The squared-out projector LED headlights also look really modern. The Conquer Grey exterior color matches the Ranger Raptor’s tough looks very very well.

Off-Road Capability

The Ranger Raptor is best experienced off-road. Over the standard Rangers, the Raptor also gets an upgraded suspension with an Aluminum Double Wishbone suspension in front and Coil-over suspension in the rear with Fox shock absorbers all around. Also important to note is the 32.5-degree approach angle, 24-degree departure angle, and 24-degree break over angle, which will make going over obstacles an easier task.

Thanks to the upgraded suspension and wheels as well, the Ranger Raptor gets 283 millimeters of ground clearance. That also makes it easier to avoid obstacles and gives it a best-in-class wading depth of 850 millimeters.

It’s not all physical upgrades though. The Ranger Raptor also gets Baja Mode, which when activated gives the truck the capability to do high-speed off-roading with better stability through the engine, steering, and transmission.

Interior Upgrades

Not much is changed in the Ranger Raptor’s interior. It will be very familiar to those who know their Rangers well. Leather stitching around is colored blue for a sportier appearance. Unique to the Raptor are the sport leather seats with suede inserts. They not only look better, they’re also more comfortable and hold your body better for when you bring this truck to its limits.

The four-spoke steering wheel is similar to the regular Ranger and Everest but with a larger sport grips, Raptor logo, and a red on-center marker which will be important when you’re having fun off-road.

On-Road Ride Comfort

You’ll be surprised to know that the Ranger Raptor is actually a very comfortable cruiser for when you’re not going over rocks and boulders. When driving on the road, the Raptor rides very smoothly thanks to the suspension. Some do say that it gets bouncy at times but it’s still not rough. Noise insulation is also really good considering that all-terrain tires are usually irritatingly loud. There’s more engine noise than road noise and that’s still not bad as the engine on this thing sounds great.

Driving Experience

Other than upgraded exterior looks, the driving experience is what really sets the Ranger Raptor apart from the other members of the Ranger family. The 2.0-liter Bi-turbo diesel engine is just perfect. Power is more than enough for what you’ll need and torque is always there. The 10-speed automatic also shifts really fast with no delays.

Steering feel is unexpectedly light but that helps make driving this huge truck easier. There isn’t much body-roll at curves which makes cornering very enjoyable. It’s one thing that you should experience, just make sure to please do it within the safety of a closed course.

With an SRP of Php 1,998,000, the Ford Ranger Raptor is not cheap. This is more apparent when you compare the price of other pick-up trucks. The more money spent to get one of these trucks is worth it though. With the extensive amount of upgrades and the driving experience, you’re looking at one of the best, if not the best pick-up trucks available in our market today.
