Another one bites the dust: The final Subaru Legacy rolled off the production line

It’s getting harder and harder to be a sedan or wagon fan in today’s crossover-dominated world. With the luxury sports sedan segment slowly dying off in major markets, we’re also seeing more mainstream brands kill off their traditional sedan offerings. Last April 2024, Suabru announced that it would be discontinuing the Legacy in 2025.

This was their mid-sized/executive sedan offering globally (it was discontinued in the Philippines by Motor Image Pilipinas in 2022), but it was mainly designed with the American market in mind, ever since its introduction on September 11, 1989.
Additionally, it was also assembled at the Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) plant in Lafayette, Indiana, in addition to its Yajima plant in Gunma, Japan, which explains the vehicle’s significance to the American market.

This mid-sized sedan was also famously offered in a wagon variant, which eventually paved the way for the first “crossover” wagon in the Outback. Because of this, the Legacy is Subaru’s longest-running model line.

The automaker’s official statement of why it was discontinued is plain and simple: it’s reflecting the market’s shift in preference from cars to SUVs and crossovers, alongside the brand’s shift to electrified and full electric vehicles. The Legacy never got any of the new e-Boxer tech that’s now seen in the Forester in the first place.
