BIMS 2025 | Will the BYD M6 full-electric MPV make sense in PH?

With a model, whether full EV or plug-in hybrid, in nearly every segment at competitive prices plus strong market reception, BYD Cars Philippines surely wants to take over the local automotive industry.

The Chinese automaker already has sedans, crossovers, and even a pickup truck. Perhaps it’s time to tap into the very popular subcompact MPV segment. That’s where the BYD M6 comes in.

We got up close and personal at the M6 during the 46th Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) in Thailand. By the looks of it, this could definitely take on the likes of the extremely popular Mitsubishi Xpander and Toyota Veloz, but in full electric power.

Powering the BYD M6 are different electric motor choices. The most powerful option produces 204 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque. With a 71.8 kWh BYD Blade Battery, it can drive for up to 530 km on a single charge.

Other markets also get the Song Max DM-i, which is the M6’s plug-in hybrid version. On top of its different front fascia, it gets a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that makes 110 horsepower and 135 Nm of torque and acts as a generator for its electric motor that produces 197 horsepower and 325 Nm. Driving range is over 1,000 km combined, with an all-electric range of 105 km thanks to its 18.3 kWh battery.

In the looks department, the M6 takes some styling cues from the Han and Tang with its sleek front fascia. The side and rear are rather simple, if not old-looking. The interior, on the other hand, is typical BYD with a rotating touchscreen and loads of space.

Seating options vary with six- or seven-seater options. The latter will likely be standard while the former could give the Hyundai Stargazer, the only model in the segment to offer seating for six, a run for its money.

Would you choose the BYD M6 or Song Max DM-i instead of their more traditional and mainstream ICE-powered rivals?
