BYD’s new charging tech can charge as fast as 1 mW

Electric cars are great and all, but one thing that concerns most people is charging. While destination and home chargers are a thing, nothing beats an ICE-powered car’s ability to go from near-empty to full in a matter of minutes.

Hence, the advent of rapid charging. But even the fastest of these chargers still takes a good half an hour at most. This is until BYD decided to release a charger that can “achieve the same speed of oil and electricity”

Dubbed the Megawatt Flash Charger, it’s capable of up to 1,000 kW with a discharge rate of 10C that can give supported vehicles up to 400km of range in five minutes. Essentially, you’re getting two kilometers every second.

Right now, there are two BYD models that support these extreme charging speeds. These are the new BYD Han L and Tang L, which sport the new BYD Super e-Platform, which allows the battery to sustain a maximum charging current of 1,000amps. These cars also utilize a new automotive-grade silicon carbide chip that can manage up to 1,500V, making all of this possible.

As for these “flash charging” stations, BYD will be building 4,000 of these across China, and these will be liquid-cooled and capable of outputting up to 1,360 kW of power. With companies like Tesla setting up a network of Superchargers across the country, we hope to see something similar in the Philippines, especially with how strong BYD currently is.
