Did BYD Cars PH just tease the arrival of the Shark pickup truck?
BYD is mostly known for its lineup of crossovers, specifically its best-selling Atto 3 EV, and the range-extended hybrid Sealion 6 DM-i. We’re sure you’ve heard of the Shark midsize pickup truck and it looks like it’s coming to the Philippines soon.
BYD Cars Philippines posted on its social media pages today a different kind of teaser, asking its followers through a poll what they would do with an electrified pickup truck. Check out the screenshot below:
With the Shark as the only pickup truck in the Chinese NEV manufacturer’s lineup, the post obviously points at the fact that it will be launching in the country soon. It first made its debut in Mexico last year and is the first pickup truck to be made by BYD.
Unlike most midsize pickup trucks, it does not get a turbodiesel engine under the hood. Instead it gets a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine paired to dual electric motors and BYD Blade (LFP) battery. In total, it produces a combined output of 436 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque which easily beats-out its potential rivals.
Design-wise, the Shark is distant from all other BYD models, instead wearing a boxy and tough exterior appropriate for a pickup truck. The same goes on the inside but matched with the rest of the lineup through the presence of floating style screens including a rotating infotainment touchscreen.
As of this writing, there is still no full-hybrid pickup truck available in the Philippines. The BYD Shark’s most direct rival, the Changan Hunter EREV, was previewed at last year’s Philippine International Motor Show but with no news yet on its launch.
