Ford Expedition gets facelift, new tech for 2022
When you think Ford, one of the first things that will probably pop-up in your mind is a large SUV fit for VIPs and celebrities and that is basically synonymous with the Expedition.
The blue oval’s largest SUV offering gets a few updates to keep it fresh for the coming years. Not only does it get updated styling and tech, it even gets a new off-road ready variant and performance package.
On the outside, the 2022 Expedition gets a new front grille with a mesh pattern and two bars connecting the headlights which also get updated clusters. The taillight clusters have also been updated with a design that appears to be inspired by the smaller Explorer.
Inside, the 2022 Expedition gets some more interesting updates. Other than a new dashboard design, smack in the center is a new 15.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system with SYNC 4A. Lower variants get a 12-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen as standard. The former is the largest touchscreen infotainment system available in the segment. It also gets a 12.4-inch HD fully-digital instrument cluster. In addition, the Expedition also gets a 22-speaker Bang&Olufsen Unleased audio system and a rear entertainment system.
Ford also took this update as an opportunity to introduce a new and more rugged variant, dubbed the Timberline. This version gets higher ground clearance to help clear obstacles, Trail Turn Assist for making tight turns, plus an F-150 Raptor heavy-duty underbody skid plate for more rugged off-road ability. In addition, it also gets 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain tires, and a two-speed transfer case.
There is also a new Stealth Edition Performance Package. Available on Expedition Limited and Limited MAX, Stealth Edition Performance Package sports modern, stylish gloss-black features including grille, mirror caps, roof rails, running boards, tailgate appliqué, rear bumper skid plate, fog lamp bezels, plus headlamp and taillamp housing. Unique red brake calipers sit behind larger 22-inch premium black aluminum wheels, while “Expedition” and “Limited” badging in black are featured front and back, plus new black Ford oval emblems.
Under the hood of the 2022 Ford Expedition is a carried-over 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 that still produces 375 hp and 508 Nm of torque. The new Timberline variant and Stealth Performance Package equipped Expeditions get the same engine but with higher output numbers of 440 hp and 691 Nm of torque. Either way, all Expeditions get power sent through a 10-speed automatic transmission.
When it comes to safety, the updated Ford Expedition adds a couple of driver-assist features, namely Road Edge Detection, Intersection Assist, Reverse Brake Assist, Evasive Steering Assist, and Active Air Dam.
We don’t know whether Ford Philippines will be offering the updated Expedition locally. Considering that the Expedition does still sell well locally, it’s still a huge possibility though we most likely won’t be seeing the Stealth Performance Package and Timberline variant available in local showrooms. For now, the updated 2022 Ford Expedition will begin sales in the United States in the first quarter of 2022.
