Geely launches new Emgrand in China, a fancy Vios alternative
The B-segment sedan, otherwise known as the subcompact sedan segment is very popular in the Philippines, especially for first-time car buyers. Models in the segment are those like the Toyota Vios, Honda City, and Mitsubishi Mirage G4, to name a few. While Geely is currently gaining popularity locally, it may seem wise for them to join the battle but with what model?
Just launched in China, the fourth generation of the Geely Emgrand is the brand’s latest entry into the segment, designed to compete squarely against the likes of the models mentioned above. It is built on the same B-segment Modular Platform (BMA) as the Coolray subcompact crossover SUV, the brand’s most popular model in the local market.
In terms of looks, the Emgrand wears a traditional sedan look but appears to have a lot of European inspiration, taking cues from the larger Preface sedan and even the Xingyue L SUV. Features include projector headlights with LED daytime running lights, a rear diffuser, and full-width LED taillights embedded with the Geely nameplate.
The interior looks quite premium for a B-segment sedan, from its design to available equipment which include a 12.3-inch fully-digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, a CN95 intelligent purifying air conditioning system. Higher variants will also offer a 540° surround view camera system, ultra-high definition driving recorder, and a hands-free trunk opener.
Under the hood, the Geely Emgrand is powered by a 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated inline-4 cylinder DVVT engine that produces 113 horsepower and 147 Nm of torque. This is paired to a 5-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with 8 simulated gear ratios.
There is no word whether Geely Philippines is planning to introduce this model to compete in the locally popular segment. A quick look on their official website does show that they will be launching a sedan model. Given the lower tax rate for China-sourced vehicles with engine displacements of 1.5 liters and lower, it can surely be priced very much competitively versus other segment leaders.
With Geely Philippines promising to introduce a new model every six months, it will be a short wait to find out their next new model, knowing they introduced the Okavango, their latest model, more than six months ago.
