GWM is China’s 4×4 specialist

When you think of car brands from China, most of them offer crossovers of different sizes in their lineups. What isn’t the usual is one that makes several off-road models. That’s what GWM is here for.
The Chinese automaker is the top-selling brand for off-road capable vehicles in the world’s largest automotive market. In fact, one out of every two off-road vehicles in China is a GWM and that’s something that they aim to do globally.

GWM’s off-road lineup is quite expansive, with models under the main GWM brand (Cannon, Sahar Poer), and the Haval (Haval H9) and Tank (Tank 300, Tank 400, Tank 500, Tank 700 sub-brands, with each with different types of models on offer for different buyers and their respective needs.
The Chinese automaker also has a handful of new powertrains (ICE and electrified), vehicle architecture, and technologies to make their products even better and more capable for any kind of driving conditions.

First is the Hi4-T Super Hybrid Off-Road Architecture which is designed for hardcore off-roading. According to GWM, this offers powerful performance, efficiency in both electric and normal fuel-powered driving. It should also be able to provide confident control across all driving conditions.
Next is the Hi4-Z All-Terrain Super Electric Hybrid Platform which can be had with either 2.0-liter or 3.0-liter turbocharged engines, paired to high-power front and rear electric motors, and the world’s shortest transmission case.

The powertrain is capable of a total output of up to 972 horsepower (715kW), a 0 to 100 kph acceleration time of around four seconds, and over 200km of electric range with a battery capacity of 59.05kWh.
It’s the first to bring power split technology to off-road vehicles. This platform also includes front and rear mechanical locking differentials and a five-link rear suspension for off-roading.

Currently, the company already offers powertrains such as a 3.0-liter turbo V6 and a 2.4-liter turbodiesel, mated to nine-speed automatic and hybrid transmissions. Their off-road vehicles are also classified into separate categories such as Extreme Off-Road, Hardcore Off-Road, All-Terrain, and Urban SUV, making it easier for buyers to choose which fits them best.
GWM wants to expand its presence in the global market for off-road models. It will surely take a lot of research and development, but with what they already have being developed, they’re on the right track.
