Honda Odyssey gets update for 2021 in Japan

Including new Wave-to-open sliding doors.

Back in 2015, Honda Cars Philippines introduced the Honda Odyssey, sourced from the brand’s home market of Japan. This replaced the North American version which was sold in the country for a few years. This made it more affordable for the Philippine market and also came with smaller overall dimensions but with a more luxurious interior.

This mode has received a couple of updates through the years which were mostly minor. Now in Japan, Honda has given the same generation Odyssey an update for the 2021 model year. The updates appear to be both on the outside and inside, and even in tech and are now much more major than before.

On the outside, the new JDM Odyssey gets a heavily revised front fascia that looks a bit more similar to the USDM Odyssey. Honda’s signature “Solid Wing Face” grille design is there as well as a set of LED headlights and fog lights. It actually appears that this no longer shares any front panels with the current pre-facelift version. There are no photos of the rear so we don’t have any idea yet as to whether it also received changes.

The 2021 JDM Honda Odyssey also gets a major upgrade. While the current one already looks premium, the new one elevates it further. The upper portion is all-new and features a new floating touchscreen infotainment system and a large portion covered by faux wood trim. The air conditioning vents also now look sleeker. The steering wheel is also new and looks like it was taken from the current generation Honda Accord which the Odyssey has shared steering wheels with the past few generations. The gear shifter and touch-sensitive climate controls on the other hand are carried-over from before.

A new feature in the Odyssey is an industry first gesture control power sliding door. While power sliding doors and kick-to-open tailgates are common these days, this piece of new tech is a first. All you’ll need to do is wave your hand over the sensor, towards the rear direction of the minivan to open. To close, wave the opposite direction.

The 2021 Honda Odyssey will first make its debut in Japan later this year. Hopefully other markets such as ours will follow very soon.
