Is the plug-in hybrid Geely EX5 EM-i on its way to PH?

As you probably already know, the Geely brand had (and is still undergoing) quite the revitalization after it was hounded by some issues under its previous distributor.
Among the things done to the brand so far under its new management was the introduction of the heavily updated Coolray, some small updates to the Emgrand and Okavango, and the introduction of the brand’s first fully electric offering in our market, the EX5.

We’ll be focusing on the EX5 as it seems like Geely Motor Philippines (GMP) is preparing to bring in the compact crossover’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant, the EX5 EM-i, which was only recently revealed in Australia. This is based on information from the Department of Energy’s List of Recognized Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles.
According to the posting, powering the EX5 EM-i, is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 99 horsepower and 125Nm of torque, paired to an electric motor that produces 218 horsepower and 262Nm.
Its lithium iron phosphate battery has a capacity of 18.4kWh, giving it an all-electric range of up to 83km or a combined range of up to 943km. These are all numbers that match what the Australian version has to offer.

And compared to the fully electric EX5, the EX5 EM-i gets a slightly revised exterior look, featuring slim daytime running lights which are connected by a light bar, with separated headlight units lower into the more sculpted bumper.

The wheels get a more elegant appearance, the taillights get a different light signature, and the spoiler has a more aerodynamic design. The rest of the vehicle is largely similar.
That includes the interior which keeps the minimalist design, high center console, large central infotainment screen, and two-spoke steering wheel. It also keeps the 16-speaker Flyme audio system, losing only the front seat massagers.

If Geely Motor Philippines will indeed be launching the EX5 EM-i locally, it’ll surely go against the very strong-selling BYD Sealion 6 DM-i. The DOE recognition is already a sign, we just don’t know when.
For now though, Geely says that the EX5 EM-i will first be made available in Australia, followed by markets such as Poland, Indonesia, Thailand, Mexico, among others.
