MIAS 2023: Ford Ranger Raptor makes surprise appearance in PH
Probably one of the most awaited models (or model variants) in the Philippines, the Ford Ranger Raptor is finally here as Ford Philippines has given members of motoring media and the general public a surprise appearance of the higher-performance version of its popular midsize pickup truck offering at the recently concluded 2023 Manila International Auto Show.
The Ford Ranger Raptor reached the ASEAN region last year with the diesel-powered version following just a few weeks ago during the recently concluded Bangkok International Motor Show. Now that it’s here with us, we can soon be able to experience what performance this pickup truck is capable of.
Of course, let’s talk about what sets this apart from other Rangers in terms of performance first. The Ford Ranger Raptor is powered by choices of a 3.0-liter V6 EcoBoost Twin Turbo gasoline engine or a 2.0-liter Inline 4-cylinder Bi-Turbo diesel engine. The former produces 397 hp and 583 Nm of torque while the latter being a carry-over from the previous generation still makes 213 hp and 500 Nm. Both are also paired to a 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission.
The one on display at the MIAS looks to be the diesel version because of its lack of dual exhaust pipes in the rear which would indicate that it is a V6. Given the love of our market for diesel-powered vehicles despite gasoline-powered vehicles having similar efficiency, lower maintenance costs, and cleaner emissions, it’s no surprise that Ford Philippines would opt to introduce the oil-burning option.
As for other upgrades compared to the standard Ford Ranger, these are adaptive Fox dampers with 2.5-inch Live Valve internal bypass, lightweight aluminum upper and lower control arms, new full-time 4WD system with electronically-controlled two-speed transfer case, front and rear locking differential.
Exterior and interior changes on the other hand include the signature F-O-R-D front grille, a more rugged front and rear bumper, larger side steps, flared wheel arches, 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, orange interior accents, sport seats, and an on-center marker and Raptor logo on the steering wheel.
Ford Philippines has remained quiet when it comes to the new Ranger Raptor, in terms of local specifications and even a launch date. Other reports do say that it is expected within the coming months, and even quotes the company’s managing director, Mike Breen, saying it’ll be before the 3rd quarter of this year. Very exciting, for sure!
