Toyota C-HR debuts, should PH get it?

Toyota has unveiled the all-new second generation of its C-HR subcompact crossover. Standing for “Coupe-High Rider,” the C-HR is designed to compete with the likes of the Nissan Juke and Honda HR-V, and features a complete redesign, new technology, and new hybrid powertrains.

The 2nd generation Toyota C-HR is a large departure from the previous generation with its Prius-like front fascia, taking cues from the Toyota Prologue concept, giving it a sleeker appearance. It also looks very EV-like with the lack of a grille on the upper portion of its front fascia. The side shows some angular body lines and hidden door handles. The rear maintains its fastback look and gets full-width LED taillights.

Inside, the new C-HR’s cabin is elevated with a more premium look and finish, making use of more horizontal lines than curves, as well as having more tech such as its large touchscreen infotainment system and large digital instrument cluster. It also gets sport seats with contrast stitching and a large sunroof.

Powering the 2nd generation Toyota C-HR are three different choices of hybrid powertrains. The first is a 1.8-liter hybrid powertrain that produces a total combined output of 140 hp. The second option is a 2.0-liter hybrid with combined output of 198 hp. Last is a 2.0-liter plug-in hybrid with a combined output of 223 hp. The PHEV option can also drive on pure electric power for 66 kilometers.

Should it be launched in PH?

The Toyota C-HR will definitely look great on Philippine roads but we are highly unlikely to get it here. Considering how the previous generation was not launched here due to various reasons such as costs and its SRP becoming too high if ever, it is likely to stay that way with this new model. In addition, it was designed exclusively for the European market.

It also wouldn’t make sense as Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) already has two models in the subcompact crossover class—the Raize and Corolla Cross, with the Yaris Cross also expected to follow. But who knows? Maybe Toyota Motor Philippines may find a way to bring it in.

Anyway, the all-new Toyota C-HR will be sold and manufactured in Europe. It is also good to note that it will no longer be sold in the United States where it has already been replaced by the Corolla Cross.
