All-new Mitsubishi Strada revealed as Triton in Thailand

Perhaps one of the most awaited vehicles this year, the all-new Mitsubishi Triton, known as the Strada here in the Philippines, has finally been revealed in Thailand.

Revealed as the XRT Concept at this year’s Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS), the all-new Mitsubishi Triton is a complete departure from the previous generation, wearing a completely new look inside and out, riding on a new platform with a new chassis, new engine, and new technology.

The all-new Mitsubishi Triton is larger than before with an increased tread of 50 mm and 130 mm longer wheelbase which should improve various performance aspects of the vehicle, as well as increased interior space. Body types include single cab, double cab, and club cab. The single and double cab are likely to come to the Philippines. For dimensions, the double cab version which will be the most common here measures at 5,360 mm long, 1,930 mm wide, and 1,815 mm tall. This also means that it is now larger than the Toyota Hilux.

In terms of design, the all-new Mitsubishi Triton does not stray that far from the XRT Concept. Like the concept vehicle, the Triton gets a more athletic, muscular, rugged, and tough appearance overall with its boxier shape and use of more straight lines, following the “Beast Mode” design concept. In front it gets an evolved version of Mitsubishi’s signature Dynamic Shield front grille, flanked by split headlights. The rear on the other hand gets T-shaped LED taillights and the tailgate gets hydraulic dampers for easier opening and closing.

And inside, where the previous generation definitely didn’t age well, the all-new Triton finally gets a more modern and premium interior. The horizontal line theme continues here. Other design details and features include a new three-spoke steering wheel, 9-inch floating-style touchscreen infotainment system, 7-inch driver’s information display, and toggle switch buttons.

While it may sound similar to the previous generation, powering the all-new Mitsubishi Triton is a new 2.4-liter 4N16 Inline 4-cylinder MIVEC turbo diesel engine with Mitsubishi’s Clean Diesel technology. It produces 204 horsepower and 470 Nm of torque, which are improvements of 20 hp and 40 Nm compared to the previous generation’s 4N15 engine. Interestingly, Mitsubishi has decided to still pair it to a 6-speed automatic transmission. A 6-speed manual transmission is also available.

This powertrain also comes with other lower output versions for lower variants. The first version makes 148 hp and 330 Nm of torque, while another makes 184 hp and 430 Nm just like the old 4N15 engine.

Also like before, the all-new Triton continues to offer Mitsubishi’s iconic off-road feature, Super Select 4WD-II. This system provides the vehicle with a central differential lock, 40% front and 60% rear traction distribution, and a 4H mode that can be used on and off road in any road condition. It also gets 7 selectable drive modes: Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock.

Finally, it gets Active Yaw Control (AYC) which was first developed for the Lancer Evolution. This allows for smooth, nimble, and agile handling on tight corners or on slippery surfaces.

Being one of the first in the segment to get advanced driver-assist safety tech, the all-new Triton continues with providing features from the brand’s Diamond Sense suite: Forward Collision Mitigation now with Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection, new Front Cross Traffic Alert, Driver Monitoring System and Driver Attention Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, Rear Automatic Emergency Braking, and Automatic Post-Collision Braking System.

And you’re probably wondering if this will arrive in the Philippines. Well it really is more of a matter of when than if because this will surely come. Mitsubishi Motors Philippines will soon be celebrating its 60th anniversary with a display of the XRT Concept. Who knows? Maybe the all-new Mitsubishi Strada can make a surprise appearance there.
