The 70-series Toyota Land Cruiser gets new styling and an automatic transmission

The all-new 250-series Toyota Land Cruiser was just revealed with retro styling inspired by older generations of the long-standing nameplate. However, why get something that just looks the part when you can get the real thing in the form of the 70-series Land Cruiser

In production since 1984, Toyota first revealed the updated version of the 70-series Land Cruiser, known to many as the Land Cruiser 70 or simply the LC70, which is set to return to the Japanese market before the year ends. We’re not exactly sure if it will apply to markets outside of Japan but the LC70 has received a couple of updates in its appearance and features, as well as its powertrain.

In terms of looks, the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 maintains its classic look. In fact, it even goes back to its past with round headlights (which are now LED) and separate turn signals in front. The bumper has also been updated with an edgier and beefier look. Meanwhile, the side remains the same with only a new set of alloy wheels. As for the rear, the side mounted vertical taillights have been replaced by horizontal taillights mounted on the bumper.

Changes are not limited to the exterior as the interior gets a handful of updates as well. The overall design remains the same but the LC70 gets a new 3-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel with faux wood trim from the Toyota Fortuner, a USB-C port, and a new gear lever for the automatic transmission which is now finally available. The instrument cluster receives a new layout, and we’re not mistaken, the seats are also new.

Powering the new Toyota Land Cruiser 70 is a 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV Inline 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine that produces 204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission which is new for the model. Familiar? It’s the same tried-and-tested diesel engine that powers the Toyota Hilux, Fortuner, and outgoing Land Cruiser Prado. There is no mention if the 4.5L 1VD-FTV V8 turbodiesel will remain available. Cruise control is also now standard thanks to the automatic transmission.

Again, the updated 70-series Toyota Land Cruiser is set to be introduced in Japan before the year ends. Perhaps other markets like Australia and the Middle East will follow soon after. It is unlikely that Toyota Motor Philippines will introduce this locally but given its popularity in the gray market, who knows?
