Toyota Hilux gets a 48V mild-hybrid system in Europe
Electrification in one way or another is the way to go these days. Toyota is one of the pioneers of the electrification game in the entire industry. This time, one of their most important models gets just that.
The Japanese automaker has revealed an update to the Toyota Hilux, but while it may look exactly like the current Hilux on face value, changes are found underneath.
What sets this Hilux apart is the mild-hybrid powertrain. A 48-volt lithium-ion battery has been added to the tried-and-tested 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV turbodiesel engine, providing 16 horsepower and 65 Nm of torque. In total, combined power output remains at 204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. The 48V system does however allow the powertrain to provide better acceleration, power delivery, and fuel efficiency.
Like any other hybrid vehicle, the lithium-ion battery is charged through regenerative braking while at the same time providing a more effective and natural braking feel.
Another feature the mild-hybrid version gets an enhanced automatic start-stop system which allows the powertrain to remain off for a longer period of time, helping improve fuel efficiency by up to 5%.
In addition, for the first time on a Hilux, a new Multi-terrain Select system is equipped, providing the driver the option to adjust vehicle stability control settings, or the driver select one of five different modes—Dirt, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow, or Rock.
Of course, water wading capacity is important in a pickup truck. With the mild-hybrid system, the Hilux can still wade through the same depth of 700 mm thanks to waterproofing done to the 48V battery and DC-DC converter.
We don’t know yet if Toyota Motor Philippines will introduce the mild-hybrid Hilux in our market, but who knows? It might have the chance to be the first electrified (non-full electric) pickup truck locally.
