The Omoda 5 receives a five-star rating from ASEAN NCAP
The (Chery) Omoda 5 may have gained some notoriety after an incident in Malaysia where its rear axle would snap and detach from the vehicle. Chery Malaysia did immediately announce a recall and needed repairs or part replacements were done.
Now, the subcompact crossover (which will be available in our market hopefully this year) is actually very safe as proven by the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP) which has given it a perfect five-star safety rating.
The Omoda 5 gained an accumulated score of 88.64 points based on a total of four assessment categories under the ASEAN NCAP’s 2021-2025 protocol. The scores per category are as follows:
- Adult Occupant Protection (AOP): 36.77 points
- Child Occupant Protection (COP): 17.36 points
- Safety Assist (SA): 19.51 points
- Motorcyclist Safety (MS): 15.00 points
Among the safety features the Omoda 5 comes equipped with as standard are six airbags, Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Seatbelt Reminder System for all occupants, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) City, AEB Inter-Urban, Blind Spot Detection (BSD) for both the driver and front passenger sides of the vehicle, Auto High Beam (AHB), and Pedestrian Protection (PP) technology.
Optional are Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system, Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA).
“ASEAN NCAP hopes Chery will continue to ensure its other models marketed for the region meet the same performance as the OMODA 5. This will undoubtedly give the needed safety benefits for the ASEAN users to enjoy and subsequently help to reduce the high number of road fatalities the region is currently faced with,” read a statement by ASEAN NCAP.
