The latest in Philippine motoring.

The Nissan Patrol is now seven generations strong

The Toyota Land Cruiser may be the most popular large SUV (especially here in the Philippines) but the Nissan Patrol has always been in its shadow, offering a less flashy but equally impressive package. Some say that it might even be better than its popular rival.

After a few weeks of teasers, Nissan has finally taken the covers off the all-new generation of their full-size SUV offering, marking its seventh since it first debuted in 1951, and more than 14 years after the sixth generation (Y62)

Design-wise, Nissan has gone all out with the all-new Patrol, giving it a much bolder and more upmarket look characterized by sleeker lines and a large new iteration of their signature V-Motion grille and the headlights which get a C-shaped signature for the daytime running lights and taillights, and 22-inch alloy wheels.

Nissan has also balanced the sleeker appearance with hints of ruggedness through muscular shapes on the bumpers and wheel arches, giving it more presence as well as a touch of its past as an off-road focused vehicle.

Inside, Nissan has taken the Patrol to the modern-world with a much sleeker design and more technology. As expected, it’s also more upmarket as well with quilted leather seats and Japanese Kumiko wood craft.

Front and second row occupants will also enjoy the NASA-inspired spinal support technology integrated into the seats. This is designed for better comfort by promoting optimal sitting posture and minimizing fatigue. It now gets a panoramic sunroof as well.

There’s also a 28.6-inch monolith display that houses dual 14.3-inch screens for the driver’s display and the touchscreen infotainment system, matched with a 12-speaker Klipsch premium audio system which comes with DynamicAudioReveal technology and DJX 3D Surround Sound for an even better listening experience. Rear occupants will also get to enjoy a pair of 12.8-inch entertainment screens mounted on the front seatbacks for video streaming and playing games via Miracast, or USB or HDMI connections.

As we already know, gone is the Patrol’s mighty V8 engine and in its place is a new 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 gasoline engine which is shared with its more luxurious Infiniti QX80 sibling. For this implementation, it produces 425 horsepower and the same 700 Nm of torque, also mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission.

For comparison, the outgoing model’s 5.6-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine makes 400 horsepower and 560 Nm, mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. This means the new powertrain will have 25 horsepower and 140 Nm of torque more which will definitely translate to faster performance, and perhaps even better fuel economy.

This new powertrain also features six drive modes: Standard, Sand, Rock, Mud, Eco and Sport; and a 4WD transfer mode interlock system which allows drivers to seamlessly switch between different off-road modes

Also available is a 3.5-liter naturally-aspirated V6 engine that makes 316 horsepower and 386 Nm of torque, also mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission.

As with many new vehicles these days, the all-new Patrol is equipped with various advanced driver-assist systems including Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Predictive Forward Collision Warning and Rear Automatic Emergency Braking.

It also now gets Nissan’s ProPILOT technology for the first time. This is the adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistance working together for a semi-autonomous driving experience.

Also typical with Nissan vehicles, it is equipped with a 360-degree view camera through a new 3D Around View Monitor for easier maneuvering in tight spaces, as well as a Smart Rear View Mirror and Rear Zoom View for better rear visibility.

For those who will be taking their Patrols off-road, it also comes with Panorama View with Ultra Wide View and Invisible Hood View which shows what’s underneath the vehicle for safer maneuvering off the beaten path.

The all-new Nissan Patrol will first be made available in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabian markets, as well as other Middle Eastern markets starting November 1, 2024, with other markets to follow suit. As for the Philippines, given the model’s growing popularity locally, it may come sooner than later, but we don’t know yet at this point.
