The TRB plans to ban placement of RFID stickers on headlights
The Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) is definitely trying to find ways to make the full implementation of cashless toll payments in local expressways much easier and convenient.
After delaying the implementation of the Joint Memorandum Circular 2024-001 (JMC 2024-001) which specifies new guidelines and violation penalties for the use of cashless RFID sticker-based toll payments on expressways, in order to give time for toll operators and vehicle owners to ensure everything is in order, a new idea is being proposed.
The TRB is planning to prohibit the installation of RFID stickers on vehicle headlights, and instead limit it to windshields. Right now, vehicle owners have the option to install their RFID stickers either on their windshields or headlights.
According to the TRB, RFID stickers installed on vehicle headlights are more prone to damage due to various elements such as the weather and other factors while on the road. Those installed on windshields are placed inside the vehicle, limiting exposure.
In addition, the placement of the stickers on headlights can also be affected by the design of vehicles, such as the presence of chrome and other metallic pieces, which makes detection slower if it does not fail. This is not an issue with windshield-installed stickers.
Take note that this rule is not yet in effect but we do think that it is a step in the right direction. The only issue would be with many vehicles which have heavily tinted windshields. This can be easily rectified by cutting a portion of windshield tint to match the standard shape and size of the RFID stickers, or using a lighter shade.
Do you think the TRB should move forward with this proposal?
