The fifth generation Ford Expedition is ready for your…expeditions
If there’s one model’s local demise that saddened us, it’s that of the Ford Expedition which was once among the most popular models of the American automaker here in the Philippines. It was even considered a status symbol by many just like the Nissan Patrol and Toyota Land Cruiser.
Well even if it’s no longer with us here, it’s still going strong in other markets such as the United States where it has just received its all-new fifth generation.
Size-wise, the all-new Expedition is as large as ever with two available lengths—5,332mm for the standard Expedition, and 5,631mm for the Max. Width measures at 2,032mm and height at 1,981mm.
In front, the all-new Expedition gets a tougher and more rugged looking front fascia with a large front grille and muscular lines. As with many new Ford vehicles, the headlights get a signature C-shaped design. It also features a full-width front light bar which some say looks like an HDMI port (hmmm).
And while the overall shape is similar, it gets a new split tailgate at the back, similar to what we used to see on the Toyota Land Cruiser 200. Wheel options also range from 18- to 24-inches in size.
Step inside and the all-new Expedition welcomes you with a cabin which seems to be somewhat inspired by its first generation version with its soft lines and two-spoke steering wheel.
As expected, it gets much more tech starting with its 24-inch panoramic display which serves as the driver’s instrument cluster, as well as a 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
Standard seating capacity is for eight occupants (including the driver), but both body styles can be optioned as a seven-seater with second row captain seats instead of a three-seater bench.
Powering the all-new Ford Expedition is a 3.5-liter Ecoboost twin-turbo V6 gasoline engine with two states of tune. The standard version outputs 406 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque, mated to a Ford’s 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission.
A higher output version is also available on the Tremor variant. That brings output up to 446 horsepower and 691 Nm.
And speaking of the Tremor, that’s an off-road ready variant that is available for the Expedition for the first time. It gets 269mm of ground clearance and 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires. It also gets Raptor-inspired running boards, off-road auxiliary lights in the front grille, a front skid plate, and underbody protection for the front axle, transfer case and fuel tank.
That’s not all though as it also gets performance tweaks in the form of a re-tuned suspension and electric power-assisted steering, as well as the addition of a Rock Crawl Mode, and trail control system that includes Trail Turn Assist and Trail 1-Pedal.
Customer deliveries in North America will happen by the second quarter of 2025. For our market, chances of it coming here are slim as Ford Philippines currently has no plans of bringing the once popular SUV back. We won’t be surprised though to see a few gray market examples coming in for the few who will want their own.
