THE RETURN: All-new Toyota Tamaraw officially launched in PH with Php 937K initial starting price
After what felt like an eternity of teasers and previews, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has finally launched the all-new generation of the iconic Tamaraw nameplate.
Now riding on the IMV platform, shared with the popular Hilux, Innova, and Fortuner, the all-new Toyota Tamaraw finally returns as a light commercial vehicle with multiple available body styles and configurations just like its predecessor from the mid 70’s to the early 2000’s.
Two lengths are available—short wheelbase (SWB) which will be made available at a later date, and long wheelbase (LWB) which is being launched today. They can be had in three standard configurations—Aluminum Van, Dropside, and FX (Utility Van). Pricing is as follows:
- Tamaraw 2.4 M/T Dropside LWB – Php 937,000
- Tamaraw 2.4 M/T Aluminum Cargo LWB – Php 1,041,000
- Tamaraw 2.4 M/T FX M/T LWB – Php 1,142,000
- Tamaraw 2.4 A/T GL Dropside LWB – Php 1,075,000
Pricing for the short-wheelbase variants will be announced closer to their availability. They do have a targeted starting price of below Php 800,000.
In terms of styling, it wears what Toyota calls Retro Polygon with its rugged and squarish design details such as the rectangular headlights and taillights, plastic bumpers and front grille, and overall boxy shape.
Inside, the retro look follows through with plenty of horizontal lines and rectangular shapes, with the addition of a few round elements. Depending on the variant, its steering wheel is lifted straight out of the Toyota Vios or Fortuner.
You can read the full specifications, features, and configuration options for the all-new Toyota Tamaraw here.
Two powertrain options are available—a 2.0-liter 1TR-FE Inline 4-cylinder dual VVT-i gasoline engine for SWB variants, and a 2.4-liter 2GD-FTV Inline 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine for LWB variants.
The former produces 139 horsepower and 183 Nm of torque, exclusively mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. On the other hand, the latter makes 150 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque, mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission. With the automatic, torque is bumped up to 400 Nm.
With Toyota Motor Philippines showing off countless examples of how the pickup can be customized or optioned, the possibilities are endless for both consumers and business owners on how to make the Tamaraw work.
