We all know how Chinese cars have gone a long way. As such, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if they were to be hailed as “car of the year” in the red dragon, or pretty much anywhere in the world.

At the 2025 China Car of the Year (China COTY) Awards, the winner of the Performance Car of the Year category is Korean—the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

Revealed in July 2023, the Ioniq 5 N is the first all-electric high-performance vehicle from the Korean automaker and the first to wear the N badge. It was able to beat models from both Chinese and foreign brands, specifically from Lynk & Co and Mercedes-Benz.

This is just among the Ioniq 5 N’s accolades from this year. Earlier, it was awarded as the World Performance Car at the 2024 World Car Awards, and various other awards from different entities.

Hyundai N made its debut in the Chinese market last year and has actively showcased the company’s high-performance electrification technology through the launch of IONIQ 5 N this year,” said Vice President and Head of China N Brand Business Group Yong Il Yin. “Moving forward, we will continue to expand the unique and exciting experiences offered by the Hyundai N brand to strengthen our position in the Chinese market.”

The China COTY Awards was started in 2012 and is evaluated by a panel composed of 48 motoring journalists and key opinion leaders (KOL) from across China. It is considered the most fair and authoritative car award in the country.
