Mitsubishi Xpander and Xpander Cross get a hybrid powertrain
Mitsubishi Thailand has officially launched the new Mitsubishi Xpander and Xpander Cross hybrid. Electrification comes to the MPV and SUV respectively through the brand’s new e:Motion technology.
Looks-wise the new hybrid models look identical to their internal combustion counterparts. However, Mitsubishi has given them some subtle styling cues such as new HEV badging and blue accents found on the wheels and side skirt.
The cabin of both the Xpander and Xpander Cross also get new updates. While the layout remains the same, a much larger 9-inch infotainment system has been added to both models along with a new 8-inch digital instrument cluster. Apple Carplay and Android Auto are still standard with the new touchscreen. Aside from this, Mitsubishi has added a wireless charger along with an electronic handbrake to the new hybrid models.
What’s underneath the hood is what’s new as they now get the option of a hybrid powertrain, and it’s not just a mild-hybrid. You’ll find here a 1.6-liter Inline 4-cylinder DOHC MIVEC gasoline engine paired to an electric motor and generator. In total, these are good for 116 horsepower and 255 Nm of torque mated to a new e-CVT. However, the 1.6-liter Atkinson cycle engine on its own produces 95 hp and 134 Nm of torque.
In terms of performance Mitsubishi says the new hybrid system lets the Xpander go from 0 to 100 km/h within 9.7 seconds. As for its fuel economy, the Japanese automaker says the new models can achieve around 19 km/l.
With the new powertrain also comes seven new driving modes—EV Priority, Charge, Normal, Tarmac, Gravel, Mud, and Wet modes.
There are no Philippine prices available yet for the new Xpander hybrids, but in Thailand these are retailing for the following prices:
- Xpander HEV – THB 912,000
- Xpander Cross HEV – THB 946,000
With today’s conversion rates it roughly translates to Php 1,440,000 for the Xpander Hybrid and Php 1,494,000 for the Xpander Cross hybrid. It is good to note though that vehicles in Thailand are usually more expensive than here in the Philippines.
Would you get a Mitsubishi Xpander or Xpander Cross HEV?
