New Volvo cars to get 180 kph speed limit
As part of its dedication to road safety and its effort to reduce road injuries and fatalities to zero, Swedish carmaker Volvo will be equipping all its new models with an electronic speed limiter which will only allow the cars to go a maximum speed of 180 kph.
All cars will also come with a Volvo Care Key. This feature will allow drivers to set additional limitations. This is perfect for when lending the vehicle to other family members or friends, and reduces the risks when the vehicle is in the hands of inexperienced drivers.
“We believe that a car maker has a responsibility to help improve traffic safety,” said Malin Ekholm, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre. “Our speed limiting technology, and the dialogue that it initiated, fits that thinking. The speed cap and Care Key help people reflect and realise that speeding is dangerous, while also providing extra peace of mind and supporting better driver behaviour.”
The decision of the company is quite controversial and they are aware of that. Citing their research, Volvo said that people often have poor understanding of the dangers of driving over the speed limit. Other areas of concern for the company are driving under the influence of alcohol and driver distraction.
As to when the feature will roll-out in locally sold units of Volvo, we’ll post updates when the information from the local distributor becomes available.
