The next-generation Toyota Corolla will be powered by a new engine that might be called the N15

The hype has begun for the next-generation Toyota Corolla as its concept version was unveiled at the recently concluded Japan Mobility Show 2025 in Tokyo.
And while the concept still looks too good to be true at the moment, Toyota is already building up even more hype as it revealed its new powertrain for the long-running and popular nameplate at a conference held at the sidelines of the motor show.

Set to power the Toyota Corolla will be a completely new powertrain which is still currently under development. To be called the N15 if there are no changes, it’s a 1.5-liter engine that will be the base of new hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems.
It’s currently rated at a modest 95 horsepower and 120Nm of torque, and is said to provide 20% better fuel economy compared to the current powertrain. Its transmission will be an e-CVT. It will also be used on the Corolla Cross sub- to compact SUV.

According to Takashi Uehara, the president of Toyota’s Powertrain Company, the N15 won’t be limited to the Corolla line too as Toyota plans to place this in larger models with a turbocharger, providing more power and torque.
There is a lot of excitement on the next generation of the compact sedan, and while the production version may be heavily dumbed down, at least we already know what to expect under the hood.
