Chery’s Omoda brand set to enter PH market
Another new car brand from China is set to enter the Philippine market this year. Originally a model series under the Chery brand, Omoda will be entering the Philippine market as a separate entity.
Omoda is the newest brand under Chery International and is aimed at younger buyers. Its name is a combination of “O” which stands for “brand new” and “Moda” which means “fashion trend.”
The brand already actually has a local social media presence since December last year. Also, according to various reports, it will be brought in by a different distributor and not United Asia Automotive Group, Inc. (UAAGI) which is already currently handling Chery Auto Philippines. In addition, those reports state that the brand will enter the market no later than October this year.
So what would the brand offer in the Philippines? Expected to come first is the Omoda 5 compact crossover which had its global reveal at the Auto Guangzhou 2021. The Omoda 5 wears Chery’s new “Art in Motion” design language and features a very modern and aggressive exterior, and tech-filled cabin filled with the latest comfort and convenience features.
Among its equipment are T-shaped daytime running lights, a large frameless front grille, 18-inch alloy wheels, wraparound taillights, dual 10.25-inch dashboard screens, sport front seats, interior mood lighting, and a sunroof.
Of course we don’t know yet what will be powering the Omoda 5 once it arrives but it is likely to be a 1.5-liter Inline 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine that produces 146 horsepower and 230 Nm of torque, paired to a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Additional info from reports say that the Omoda 5 will be priced at below Php 1.5-million which is about right for its segment, and that Omoda plans to bring in two more models as well as electrified ones in the future.
