These patent images give us an idea of what the next-gen Toyota Hilux could look like

The current generation Toyota Hilux has already been on sale for a decade.

There is a lot of anticipation towards what’s next for the extremely popular Toyota Hilux. After all, the current version has been on sale for a decade now and is definitely due for an all-new version, if not a heavy refresh.

Well, it definitely looks like Toyota will be going for the latter based on recent spy shots, and now some new leaked patent images which give us a better look on what to expect from the midsize pickup truck, at least in terms of design.

Posted by cars_secrets on Instagram, the images show that the Hilux will be receiving a very heavy update on the front and rear, and interior, while still making use of a similar cab design.

The front fascia will be going for a sleeker and more upright appearance with slim lighting units which could be the daytime running lights positioned up high, while creases on the bumpers point to split headlight units which most car manufacturers are going for these days.

The cab follows a similar shape as the current version, down to the windows, door handles, and side mirrors. Visible are new body cladding and more muscular wheel arches, and the rear section could be getting a side-step for easier bed access similar to the Ford Ranger. There are no photos of what the rear could look like but it’s clear from the side that the taillights are new.

Moving on to the interior, it looks like it’ll be sharing some cues with the likes of the Toyota Land Cruiser 300, Land Cruiser Prado 250, and even the Hiace. We might see a large tablet-style touchscreen, a pair of passenger side storage areas, and the pop-out cupholders giving way to open ones.

Other than what’s in the patent images, we don’t know much yet about what to expect from the next Toyota Hilux. Perhaps we could see it come electrified with a mild-hybrid powertrain as available in other markets currently, or maybe even a future plug-in hybrid or pure-electric version.

Who knows? Everyone is surely excited, but for now, all we can do is wait and see. The reveal? It’s rumored to happen later this year.
