Philippine car sales see large increase from May to June 2020

Some good news despite everything happening around us.

The COVID-19 pandemic has already greatly  and negatively affected not only the Philippine automotive industry but that of the entire world. Now that the Philippine economy has been opened up, there is some hope in the automotive industry despite the actual situation in the country.

Based on data from the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI) and Association of Vehicle Importers and Distributors Inc. (AVID), it appears that the Philippine automotive industry is growing once again.

From May to June 2020, CAMPI reported a sales increase of 225 percent among its members. AVID on the other hand reported a 198 percent increase among its members during the same period. Combined data from CAMPI as well as the TMA (Truck Manufacturers Association) indicate a sales figure of 15,578 units in June versus just 4,788 in May. Meanwhile, AVID’s data indicates a sales figure of 3,697 units in June as opposed to just 1,239 in May.

According to CAMPI president Rommel Gutierrez, the increase in automotive sales is due to the different car brands making use of digital platforms such as online car showrooms on their official websites, or social media channels. This allows them to safely reach more customers despite the different quarantine restrictions in place in various parts of the country. AVID president Ma. Fe Perez-Agudo also says the same but added that enticing deals and promos from various car brands and their dealers also helped.

As most of the country’s restrictions continue to lighten up, we can expect car sales to continue growing once again and perhaps can expect even more enticing car deals and promos to flood the market soon.
