The iconic FJ nameplate is back as a baby Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

People were extremely saddened when the Toyota FJ Cruiser was discontinued a couple of years ago. Despite production ending, it continued to be sold in markets that still had demand for it, including ours, until 2022.

To fill the void, Toyota has come up with somewhat of a revival with the Land Cruiser FJ, set to be unveiled at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show (JMS) 2025, and is designed as a fun alternative to the rest of the Land Cruiser line.

Starting with its size, it measures at 4,575mm long, 1,855mm wide, and 1,960mm tall. Its wheelbase is also 270mm shorter (2,580mm) compared to the Land Cruiser Prado allowing for easier maneuverability. By the way, this rides on the IMV platform which underpins the Hilux, Fortuner, Innova, and Tamaraw.

The looks are definitely what will win the hearts of Land Cruiser enthusiasts with its boxy retro-modern design, inspired by the larger Land Cruiser Prado.

Unlike the previous FJ Cruiser, this comes with five-doors, including a side-opening tailgate which also holds the spare tire, another nod to the past. Large fenders give it a muscular appearance, and the front and rear bumper’s corners are also removable and segmented, allowing them to be easily replaced when damaged.

Inside, the cockpit is definitely inspired by the Land Cruiser Prado with its modern design touches, and the Land Cruiser 70 with its retro cues. Physical buttons are present all throughout for better usability.

The Land Cruiser FJ is also designed to be customizable, with Toyota expected to release various options and accessories throughout the model’s lifespan. This includes classic-styled round headlights, load-carrying equipment, functional off-road items, and different wheel designs.

Under the hood of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is a very familiar engine. That’s a 2.7-liter 2TR-FE four-cylinder naturally-aspirated gasoline engine that has been powering Land Cruisers and the IMV line for decades. It produces 163 horsepower and 246Nm of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

That’s all we know for now, but all the details will be out soon as the Japan Mobility Show 2025 is just around the corner. We’ll also be there with Toyota Motor Philippines, so watch out for our coverage.
