The new Honda City Hatchback is capable of doing 25 km/l

Fuel economy is one of the most common things people take into consideration when buying a new car these days, especially for those on a budget or living inside cities with gridlocked streets.

Thanks to that consideration, many car buyers are going for subcompact sedans, hatchbacks, and crossovers which usually provide better fuel economy compared to other larger offerings, at an affordable price too when purchased. The recently launched Honda City Hatchback and its sedan counterpart were recently put to the test and here are the results.

HCPI conducted the fuel economy run of two of its newly launched models, the all-new City 1.5 RS CVT and the all-new City Hatchback 1.5 RS CVT, last May 30, 2021. After a total of 73.5 kilometers highway day driving, the All-New City Hatchback achieved a fuel mileage of 25 kilometers per liter. On the other hand, the All-New City achieved a fuel mileage of 25.17 kilometers per liter, significantly higher than the previous fuel economy run conducted for the City back in 2017 at 23.9 kilometers per liter.

To ensure that the fuel economy run was completed under realistic driving conditions, HCPI and AAP set some parameters for both vehicles. First, an average speed of 60-80 kilometer per hour at 1,500 to 2,000 RPM, and the vehicle’s airconditioning system set on low fan and at approximately 24 degrees.

Launched in October 2020 in time with HCPI’s 30th anniversary in the country, the all-new City is the model’s fifth generation, and has easily become one of HCPI’s best-selling models over the years. On the other hand, the all-new City Hatchback was launched last April 2021, as part of HCPI’s expansion of its renowned City model line-up, specifically in the B-segment hatchback category. It also serves as a replacement of the Jazz which saw sales discontinued just a week or two before its launch.

Both models highlight their 1.5-Liter 4 Cylinder DOHC i-VTEC engine that provides an ideal balance between performance and fuel efficiency. Furthermore, the engine is mated with Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) that produces up to a maximum power output of 119 hp at 6,600 RPM, and a maximum of 145 Nm of torque at 4,300 RPM.

“The fuel economy run is our own initiative, in partnership and supervision of Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP). Through this, we hope to provide customers accurate information that would aid them to form a decision in their car selection and purchase process. The positive results from the activity reaffirm the fuel efficiency of both City models, hopefully making them a favorable sedan and hatchback choice for the Filipino people.” Said Mr. Masahiko Nakamura, Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) president.
