The Toyota GR Corolla “evolves” once again, but when will it arrive in the PH?

If there’s one Toyota Gazoo Racing product that we don’t have in our country, it’s the GR Corolla. Essentially a Corolla hatchback but with the roided-up drivetrain of the GR Yaris, it’s the best of both worlds for fun and practicality. The GR Corolla was initially a North American model before it eventually expanded to other countries around the world.

Back in 2024, North America got an update to the GR Corolla, which also introduced the eight-speed direct-shift automatic transmission and a couple of improvements to cooling, power, and aerodynamics, to name a few.

Now for 2026, the GR Corolla receives even a few more upgrades in what they call another “evolution”. The GR Corolla now gets stiffer with additional structural adhesives, allowing for greater body rigidity with minimal weight gains.

This is followed by the addition of a cold air duct. This allows cool air to flow into the air box to further decrease intake air temperature, but it is only activated during high-speed driving.

One more change, if specified, is that the JBL Premium Sound System gets a luggage subwoofer to bump the number of speakers from eight to nine, and confusingly, the addition of Active Sound Control, or simply put, fake engine noises. Toyota says that “sporty sounds will be emitted through the vehicle’s speakers” depending on the driving situation, including burbling and fake revs. Thankfully, this can be turned off.

And if you’re an existing 2023 GR Corolla owner, there is an upcoming software upgrade program that will boost the 1.6-liter, three-cylinder turbo engine (G16E-GTS) ‘s torque output to 400Nm, and also tweak the GR-Four all-wheel drive’s torque split to 50:50 for improved handling in Normal and Gravel mode, and the ability to adjust the torque split in Track mode, allowing it to change from 60:40 (front/rear) to 30:70 (front/rear).

Now, the question is, when will we see the GR Corolla locally?
