Toyota launches RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid in Japan

We wonder if we could see this, or at least the regular hybrid, here in the Philippines.

Toyota has launched in its home market of Japan an all-new plug-in hybrid version of its RAV4 compact crossover. Ever since it was revealed as the first compact crossover SUV in 1994, the RAV4 has remained one of the company’s top-selling models worldwide.

While it remains physically identical to the regular RAV4 variants, the PHEV is equipped with the newly developed Toyota Hybrid System or THS II. This system is more powerful than the standard RAV4 hybrid system. The 2.5-liter gasoline-powered engine and inverter are paired to a new high-capacity and high-output lithium-ion battery putting out a total of 225 kW (302 hp). It has a driving range of 95 kilometers on pure electricity and should have a 0-100 kph acceleration time of just 6.0 seconds. As with the regular RAV4, the PHEV version is underpinned by the TNGA platform. The lithium-ion battery is mounted low under the floor in the center of the vehicle to improve weight distribution and to create a low center of gravity.

On the outside, the RAV4 PHEV gets a unique front grille and bumper, new LED daytime running lights, and a new set of 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels. There is also a PHEV exclusive Emotional Red exterior color. Inside, it gets black ceiling and pillars, and red stitching on the seats, dashboard, and on the door panels. The seats are wrapped in synthetic leather. A 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Toyota aims to sell 300 units of the new RAV4 PHEV every month. With any kind if electrified variant becoming a norm for most car brands worldwide, and in the Philippines for Toyota, we won’t be surprised to see them launch the RAV4 Hybrid or even the RAV4 PHEV here.
