Toyota RAV4 takes back crown as world’s best selling car for 2024

Things are going good for Toyota as their long running RAV4 nameplate has taken back the crown as the world’s best selling car.
The compact crossover model saw a 1,187,000 unit sales figure, outselling 2023’s best selling Tesla Model Y by 3,000 units. This is according to figures from London-based JATO Dynamics automotive analyst Felipe Muñoz.
The Toyota RAV4’s 2024 sales figure is an increase of 11% compared to the previous year and beats the Tesla Model Y’s 1,185,000 units which was a 3% drop. It’s also a switch from last year’s figures as the Tesla was the world’s best-selling car while the Toyota was the world’s second.

The Japanese compact crossover is currently in its last months of production as an all-new generation has already been revealed in the United States and Japan, and is expected to make its way to other markets next year.

The news is also unsurprising as Tesla saw its first decline in global sales in 2024 amid the surge in sales from Chinese rivals such as BYD, and public backlash towards its CEO Elon Musk.
And speaking of BYD, the Chinese electrified vehicle manufacturer has been able to breach the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the globe with the Qin plug-in hybrid and EV sedan.

Other vehicles that made it into the list are the Toyota Corolla Cross and Honda CR-V in third and fourth place, respectively, and the Toyota Hilux in sixth place, among others.
