Toyota unveils all-new 5th generation Prius

2 min read

Toyota has just unveiled the newest generation of its most iconic and popular vehicles in the world, the Prius, which holdsthe distinction of being the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle after it was launched back in 1997.

The 2023 Toyota Prius, now built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, has new hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, and gets a complete redesign inside and out.

When it comes to styling, the all-new fifth generation Prius is distinctively Prius especially with its “monoform” silhouette which was first seen in the 2nd generation Prius and has since been on every Prius afterward. This new one receives a much sleeker and futuristic exterior design, taking inspiration from the Toyota Crown Sport as well as the Toyota bZ4X fully electric vehicle.

The interior on the other hand features what Toyota calls its “island architecture” concept. This provides a more spacious environment with a more intuitive setup inside. According to Toyota, the interior balances sportiness with sophistication.

Powering the fifth generation Toyota Prius are two new hybrid powertrains. The first is a plug-in hybrid system composed of a 2.0-liter gasoline engine that produces 223 horsepower and can go from 0-100 kph in 6.7 seconds. The next option is a parallel series hybrid system composed of a 1.8- or 2.0-liter engine. The latter is able to produce 193 horsepower.

As for safety, the all-new Prius now comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense. It also comes with Advanced Park or an automatic parking system which enables easy automatic parking and exiting from parking spaces in a variety of parking situations, and with operation outside the car via a dedicated smartphone app, the car can also enter and exit parking spaces remotely.

The 2023 Toyota Prius will first be made available in Toyota’s home market of Japan. It will then be followed by North America, Europe then the rest of the world. With hybrids, specifically Toyota hybrids now gaining traction in the Philippines, should Toyota Motor Philippines launch this new generation here?
