It looks like the Honda – Nissan merger won’t happen anymore

Some things in life aren’t meant to be, be it a relationship with that person you’ve longed for a long while or that dream car that just slipped away. One of these is the supposed merger between Japanese giants Honda and Nissan.

For a bit of a background, these plans were announced last December, where the initial plan was that both companies would be run as subsidiaries of a newly formed holding company, with Mitsubishi potentially joining the party.

Then after a few more discussions, the proposal suddenly shifted to where Honda would be the parent company, and Nissan be the subsidiary under Honda.

Of course, we don’t know the full story of what happened exactly behind closed doors, but one could infer that Nissan wasn’t too happy with that outcome, hence the conclusion that both companies would terminate the memorandum of understanding between the two. But this break up is an amicable one, as the two brands are still set on collaborating on “intelligence and electrified vehicles”, so at least something was gained out of the talks.

As for Nissan, rumors are aswirl on the internet as it searches for someone to help bring the company back into stable ground, with recent reports from Reuters suggesting that Taiwanese chipmaker Foxconn is open to buying a stake in the automaker.
