Mazda gives MX-5 updates for 2024 with more tech, better performance

2 min read

Mazda seems to be on an update spree as after giving its two oldest products—the 2 and CX-3 some updates, the Japanese automaker has continued this time with its MX-5 roadster.

With the current 4th generation ND first released in 2015, this is the first time the Mazda MX-5, more popularly known as the Miata, receives a rather major update with new technology, some design changes, as well as performance upgrades all done.

As this is a performance roadster, let’s talk about performance upgrades first as Mazda has given this a new Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential (LSD) for its manual transmission-equipped models. It is a new LSD technology concept that stabilizes the turning behavior of the car allowing for smoother and linear turning characteristics than ever before.

For those who like driving on track, the updated MX-5 also gets a new DSC-TRACK driving mode for the Dynamic Stability Control for safer and more fun track experiences. In addition, the electric power steering system has been improved for lighter yet more accurate steering feel.

Moving to design and technology updates, the MX-5 gets a few upgrades starting with the headlights which get a new DRL design and are now an all-LED affair. The taillights also get a more polished look. Rounding up the exterior changes are new wheel designs and the availability of an Aero Gray Metallic exterior color.

As for its updated tech, you’ll find an upgraded infotainment system as Mazda has given the MX-5 its new 8.8-inch Mazda Connect touchscreen system. A smartphone app is also now available to check the condition of the vehicle. Safety tech has also been improved with the addition of Mazda Radar Cruise Control and Reverse Smart Brake Support.

Going back to performance, the 2024 Mazda MX-5 retains the options for 1.5- and 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engines with the former getting an additional 4 horsepower effectively making its output at 135 hp and 150 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the latter retains its outputs of 184 hp and 205 Nm, with transmission options for both being a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.

There isn’t any news yet about when Mazda Philippines will be launching the updated Mazda MX-5. Given though that we are one of the largest markets for the 2-seater roadster in South East Asia, we won’t be surprised if it arrives sooner than later.
