MG GT Scores Zero Star Safety Rating With ANCAP Crash Testing

2 min read

The MG 5, also known as the MG GT in markets like ours, has recently been tested by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) under its 2023 testing protocols. The results show that the sporty sedan isn’t as safe as it seems, as the organization gave the vehicle a zero-star safety rating

As with newer crash testing, the vehicle’s results are based on four main categories. These are adult occupant protection (AOP), child occupant protection (COP), vulnerable road user protection (VRUP), and safety assist features (SAF)

The sporty sedan fell short due to its poor AOP score of 15.09 out of 40. It also didn’t perform well in the frontal offset, Full Width, and Far-Side Impact crash tests, where it got a score of zero for each. It also scored zero points for front passenger Whiplash Protection, with the sedan recording significantly high injury risks in the previously mentioned crash tests. ANCAP also penalized its scores for chest deflection and seatbelt loading exceeding injury limits and for hazards being placed behind the dashboard.

Despite its abysmal AOP score, things get better in the other categories. The MG 5/MG GT got 28.81 out of 49 in Child Occupancy Protection and 26.78 out of 63 in Vulnerable Road User Protection. It got over 50% of the total score per category, which is good.

However, that’s where the good news stops as the British Heritage performed poorly yet again regarding its Safety Assist Technology. The sedan could only get 2.48 out of 18 for the testing category. It scored so poorly because it did not have seat belt reminders for the second row, it didn’t have a driving monitoring system, and an autonomous emergency braking system was also not available for the vehicle for both junctions and head-on traffic, and any form of lane keep assist.

Despite the MG 5/MG GT being a new vehicle, some safety technology is still far behind its competition. The sedan serves as a reminder that not all new models are made equal and have the same safety features or level of protection.
