Mitsubishi Montero Sport gets another facelift, new engine in Thailand

Just when you thought Mitsubishi Motors was ready to show us the next-generation of the popular Mitsubishi Triton-based Montero Sport midsize SUV, they’re just not done yet with the current generation.

The Japanese automaker has just revealed for the Thai market the new and facelifted Mitsubishi Montero Sport, called the Pajero Sport over there, which gets redesigned details on the exterior and interior, as well as new powertrain under the hood.

While its exterior remains familiar, the signature Dynamic Shield grille gets a more rugged appearance, similar to the Mitsubishi Triton and Xpander Cross. The lower part of the grille also now gets a large honeycomb pattern, while the bumper also gets a more rugged treatment. The headlight housings have been blacked-out and there are new designs for the 18-inch alloy wheels, looking similar to those found on the Nissan Terra.

An Elite Edition variant, essentially a black edition, is also available, swapping several chrome and silver pieces, the wheels, and the roof, for a gloss black finish.

Inside, it also remains largely the same. The main differences here are a new three-spoke steering wheel and a new digital instrument cluster interface with sharper and more modern graphics. Other changes include a new leather seat pattern, black headliner, and a new interior color scheme, and a new wireless phone charger. Rear passengers will also be able to enjoy a flip-down monitor.

Under the hood, the updated Mitsubishi Montero Sport in Thailand gets the new 2.4-liter 4N16 Inline 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine from the Mitsubishi Triton. Power and torque figures remain at 184 horsepower and 430 Nm as this does not get the two-stage turbo setup from its pickup truck sibling. Like there, the new powertrain is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, losing two gears from the 4N15’s transmission.

The all-new next-generation Mitsubishi Montero Sport is expected to be revealed some time next year. Until then, this is what we will be seeing. We’re not sure how long we’ll have to wait for the updated Mitsubishi Montero Sport to reach our shores, and if we’ll be getting all the updates, but a couple of months waiting is likely.
