Isuzu D-MAX gets electrified with new EV and MHEV concepts
When it comes to pickup trucks, especially here in our part of the world, diesel is the way to go. That however is no longer the case in some parts of the world with electric versions of various pickup truck models such as the Ford F-150 hitting markets.
Isuzu is going a similar route, unveiling fully-electric and mild-hybrid versions of its popular D-MAX midsize pickup truck, both set to be publicly unveiled at the upcoming 45th Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) in Bangkok, Thailand.
Despite being concept vehicles, important specifications have already been revealed. The D-MAX BEV will get a dual electric motor system paired to a 66.9 kWh lithium-ion battery, producing a total of 177 horsepower and 325 Nm of torque, with a full-time 4×4 drivetrain.
It is capable of a maximum speed of over 130 kph, with a maximum payload capacity of 1,500 kg and maximum towing capacity of 3,500 kg. Isuzu is also promising that it will perform just as well as their current diesel models.
The fully-electric Isuzu D-MAX is slated to be launched initially in select European markets such as Norway in 2025. Other markets such as the United Kingdom, Australia, and Thailand will follow soon after depending on market conditions as well as available EV charging infrastructure.
And for markets that are not yet fully adapted to EVs, Isuzu is planning to release a mild-hybrid version of the D-MAX. This combines a 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine with a 48-volt battery. This not only allows for better and smoother engine performance, but also for reduced carbon emissions.
We’ll be going to the 45th BIMS so we’ll be sure to check this out for you. That’s happening from March 27 to April 7, 2024.
