Is Changan PH launching the UNI-K?

Fresh from the recent launch and media drive of the all-new Changan CS55 Plus, we think Changan Motor Philippines, Inc. (CMPI) is gearing up for another new model introduction and it could come very soon. How soon? It could be in just a few weeks.

Strong evidence that points to that is the spotting of a new Changan vehicle undergoing testing on local roads. The photo was posted on the Interesting Car Spotting PH Facebook group, taken in the vicinity of Quezon Avenue and G. Araneta Avenue in Quezon City.

The vehicle in question is clearly a Changan UNI-K with its badges all covered. What gives it away is the Lamborghini Urus-like styling, and fin-like high mount stop lamps on the spoiler which is a Changan signature design piece.

The Changan UNI-K is the second model in the brand’s UNI line of crossovers. It was first previewed at the 2020 Beijing Auto Show as the Changan Vision-V Concept. It was then unveiled in production form during the 2020 Guangzhou Auto Show.

In terms of design, the UNI-K is definitely part of the Changan family with its aggressive front fascia composed of a large grille and sharp and slim headlights. The side shows off a clean look with minimal body lines and flushed door handles. Towards the back is a steeply raked windshield combined with a rear light bar, giving it a sleeker appearance.

Inside, the UNI-K features a very modern and tech-filled cabin. The main highlights here are the large 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and trio of digital instrument cluster screens. It also features a flat bottom and flat top steering wheel similar to that of the CS55 Plus.

If ever it is launched here, it could be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that produces 232 horsepower and 390 Nm of torque, paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Another option could be the Changan CS55 Plus’s 1.5L turbo with 188 hp and 300 Nm.

As for the launch, again we think it could be soon. CMPI was recently able to secure approval for a Certificate of Conformity (COC) with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Specifically, they secured approval for a gasoline powertrain with a displacement of 1,998 cc or equivalent of a 2.0L engine which is what powers the UNI-K. In addition, we did get word that CMPI will be introducing another model before the end of the year, as well as a couple more in the coming months.

What do you think? Should Changan Motor Philippines bring in this new striking crossover to its current selection? The next few months are definitely very exciting for the brand.
