The Toyota Rangga Concept might just be the future Tamaraw

Last year, news came out that the well-revered Toyota Tamaraw nameplate will be making a comeback. Well Toyota appears to be making that closer to reality as it previews what could be the future of its utility vehicle.

Previewed at the recent Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), PT Toyota Astra Motor (Toyota Indonesia) showed off the Rangga Concept, its next step after showing off the IMV 0 Concept some time back. This concept vehicle also tells us a lot about what we can expect from the new Tamaraw.

What mainly tells us that this is our best look at the futute Tamaraw is the design. The resemblance sure is there with its boxier, more utilitarian, and very truck-like appearance. Toyota also showed off various configurations and/or body styles including a flatbed pickup truck, camper van, and even an ambulance, among others.

It’s also good to note that the name Rangga comes from the Javanese word “Ronggo” which means strong and tough. That is also very much applicable for the Toyota Tamaraw. The Tamaraw or water buffalo is one of the toughest animals in the Philippines, hence its use in working in agriculture.

The Toyota Tamaraw was first released in 1976. Popular with businesses and families thanks to its versatility, it eventually evolved to be called the Revo, still keeping the Tamaraw badge in its tailgate. That eventually evolved into the Innova which remains as one of the most popular vehicles in the Philippines today.
