BYD is recalling nearly 100,000 vehicles in China due to fire risk, PH units not affected

(UPDATE, September 30, 2024; 10:35 AM: ACMobility, the official distributor of BYD vehicles in the Philippines has reached out to us and says that units sold in the Philippines ARE NOT AFFECTED by the recall in China.)
BYD is recalling close to 100,000 fully-electric vehicles at its home market of China starting September 30, 2024, due to a risk of fire.
The Chinese automaker filed the recall for a total of 96,714 units of the popular Dolphin and Yuan Plus (known as the Atto 3 in our market) EVs with China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).
This recall is divided between two of the Chinese automaker’s entities: BYD Auto Industry Co., Ltd. and BYD Auto Co., Ltd.
The former is recalling a total of 87,762 units of the Dolphin and Yuan Plus which were manufactured between February 4, 2023 and December 26, 2023. On the other hand, the latter is recalling 8,952 units of the Yuan Plus manufactured between November 2, 2022 and June 19, 2023.

This is due to defects in the manufacturing process of the Column-Assist Electric Power Steering (CEPS) controller. The capacitors on the controller’s circuit board may develop microcracks during vehicle use. These may expand and lead to short circuits which can cause overheating and may potentially result in a fire.
Authorized BYD dealerships in China will install additional insulation pads on the controllers free of charge to eliminate these possible safety hazards.
We are currently awaiting an official statement from BYD Cars Philippines on whether local units are affected by this recall. We will update this article once that information is available.
