PIMS 2024 | Mazda PH previews the rotary-powered MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV
Mazda Philippines is no stranger to electrification, offering a wide array of mild-hybrid powered models in their local lineup. It looks like the Japanese automaker has plans to take their electrification up a notch as it previews the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV at the 9th Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS).
Why exactly is this special? Well, the MX-30 is Mazda’s first mass-produced vehicle with a rotary engine since the iconic RX-8 was discontinued in 2012.
And that rotary engine with a displacement of 830cc is used as a power generator for a 55 kW electric motor which is paired to a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. Total combined output for the engine and electric motor is 170 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque.
On electric power alone, it can drive an estimated 85 kilometers. Combined with the generator, it can drive up to more than 640 kilometers.
This powertrain is a series hybrid system similar to Nissan’s e-POWER system, with the option to replenish its batteries through Type 2 AC or DC charging.
As expected from a Mazda, it wears the brand’s Kodo design language and features a very premium interior. One interesting bit here is that Mazda made use of recycled materials. Also, you’ll notice that it has suicide doors which is rare in vehicles these days.
Now we don’t know exactly if Mazda Philippines plans to introduce the MX-30 to the local market. If they do, it’ll be their first proper hybrid vehicle and will surely be a right step in their electrification strategy.
