Auto Shanghai 2025 | GWM’s new twin-turbo V8 is refreshing news

While most brands in the automotive world are downsizing their powertrains, GWM is heading in a different direction by unveiling their first-ever V8 engine.

To be used in their Tank lineup of SUVs and future ZX sedan line, the new engine was revealed at the 2025 Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, and has a 4.0-liter displacement and twin turbochargers.

The new V8 engine will be used for GWM’s Tank line of SUVs.

The new powertrain utilizes a 350-bar high-pressure injection system, a 5.5-bar PFI injection system, a full-MAP oil pump, and runs on the Miller cycle. It then adopts a 90-degree V-angle design, front-mounted and water-cooled intercooler, and dual exhaust pipes on both left and right sides,

GWM also made use of a dual-injection, dual-fuel pump design that allows the engine to select different injection modes based on its operating conditions, improving cold start performance and reducing carbon buildup.

We hope to see this in PH-spec GWMs in the future.

All of these allow for a more compact design, consistent engine performance, better fuel economy, and better refinement. GWM is also proud of this engine’s sound.

The Chinese automaker is definitely onto something with the new 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine. Hopefully we get to see this in our market as well with most automakers only offering small-displacement turbocharged engines in their lineups.
