Geely Motor PH to launch a subcompact and compact SUV, and small sedan

A lot has happened for the Geely brand in the Philippines over the last year, both good and bad. Its new management, directly under the brand’s main headquarters in China, has a lot in its shoes and boy do they have a lot of plans.
The company recently made its local presence felt again with the quiet introduction of the heavily-revised Coolray subcompact crossover last year and the slightly updated Emgrand subcompact sedan. Just a few days ago, we saw the big launches of the slightly updated Okavango midsize SUV, and the EX5 compact crossover which is their first fully electric offering for our market.
Despite that big lineup revitalization, the Geely Motor Philippines (GMP) isn’t resting on its laurels, announcing during the recent launch event that there’s more to come, specifically a new B-SUV (subcompact), C-SUV (compact), and even an A-sedan (city car/budget subcompact). GMP also noted that these future models will come with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and pure-ICE powertrains.

And just like you, we’re curious to know what exactly these models will be so we do have our guesses.
Starting with the B-SUV, a likely candidate is the Geely Cityray which is currently already available in the Middle East and Russia. This subcompact crossover is actually larger than the Coolray, measuring at 4,510mm of length (versus the Coolray’s 4,380mm). It shares the same 1.5-liter turbocharged engine making 181 horsepower and 290Nm.

Another possibility is the Geely Icon which is a boxy subcompact crossover about the same size as the Coolray. This one takes on a very Land Rover Range Rover Evoque-like design direction and also gets a three-cylinder turbocharged engine under the hood.

As for the compact crossover, we’re placing our bets on the Geely Galaxy L7. This sleek and futuristic plug-in hybrid model gets a 1.5-liter engine and electric motor which is capable of driving up to 1,240km on a full tank of gas and a full charge. It also comes with large interior screens for both the driver and front passenger.

Finally, for the A-sedan, our research returned nothing. Currently, GMP sells the Emgrand as its only sedan offering in the subcompact class. The A-segment should be smaller, with the future model competing with the likes of the Suzuki Dzire and Mitsubishi Mirage G4. Perhaps it’s still under development in China.
With so much in plan, Geely Motor Philippines definitely has big shoes to fill. We hope that they become more successful this time around. As they say, third time’s the charm.
