Suzuki reveals Toyota RAV4 based Across

It looks very familiar doesn’t it?

Suzuki is introducing a new plug-in hybrid crossover SUV in the European market. If the photo shows one that looks familiar, that’s because it’s a rebadged Toyota RAV4. Meet the new Suzuki Across Plug-In Hybrid.

This rebadged crossover is the result of a new partnership between the two Japanese car companies. Through this joint venture, Toyota will be providing Suzuki with hybrid powertrains and vehicles based on the RAV4 and Corolla Wagon. Suzuki will then provide Toyota two vehicles for the Indian market which will be based on the Ciaz compact sedan and Ertiga 7-seater MPV.

Upon first look, the Across already looks similar to the RAV4. It does get a completely different set of headlights, front grille and lower grille, and bumper. The rest of the body including the windows, doors, body cladding, and rear end are all carried over from the RAV4.

Inside, the Across is very much the same as the RAV4 with only the badge on the steering wheel changed. Features are also carried over from the RAV4 such as the 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather seats, and a control panel for the plug-in hybrid system.

Under the hood, the Suzuki Across is powered by a 2.5-liter four cylinder gasoline engine that is paired with two electric motors. The gasoline engine produces 175 hp and 219 Nm of torque. It is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The total combined output of the engine and electric motors have not yet been announced but as it is shared with the RAV4 PHEV, it is safe to assume that total output will be at 296 hp. Just like the RAV4, this powertrain will have a range of 75 km on electric power alone.

We don’t know if Suzuki has plans to release the new Suzuki Across in other markets outside of Europe. It would however be nice to see this compete in the growing compact crossover market in the country which is dominated by the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4 itself.
