2021 Hyundai Santa Fe engine details revealed

Choices of a new turbodiesel or two hybrid powertrains.

Hyundai started the month of June 2020 by revealing the updated Hyundai Santa Fe. The company announced all details such as new features and all about the updated design but did not mention anything about the updated model’s powertrain.

Now, Hyundai has officially announced what powertrains the updated Santa Fe will be having under its hood. The new powertrains are a turbocharged hybrid, and the one which will be popular in our market, a turbodiesel.

Let’s talk about the hybrid choices first. The first two choices are both 1.6-liter turbocharged GDI four-cylinder Smartstream engines. The first one is paired to a 44.2 kW electric motor and produces a max output of 226 hp and 350 Nm of torque. The second option is paired to a 66.9 kW electric motor and generates more horses because it is equipped with plug-in hybrid technology. It produces 261 hp and the same 350 Nm of torque. Only the all-wheel drive version of the Santa Fe can be paired with the plug-in hybrid powertrain. Both choices are mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The third option which will be the engine of choice in the Philippines is a 2.2-liter turbocharged Smartstream diesel powertrain. It produces 199 hp and 440 Nm of torque and is paired to a new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. Hyundai claims that this new engine produces fewer emissions and is cleaner that the previous engine. This is because the engine is part of the company’s Smartstream line-up of diesel powertrains.

There is no word yet as to when the updated Hyundai Santa Fe will be launched in the Philippines. It would probably already be given that Hyundai Philippines will option it with the 2.2-liter turbodiesel. It may be possible though that they may choose to bring in the hybrid version as well as it will also benefit from a 50% excise tax discount.
