This is your first look at the next-gen BMW X5, and it will be offered with five powertrains

With the reveal of the all-new Neue Klasse BMW iX3 recently, it’s time for a major paradigm shift within BMW as it readies itself for an incredibly busy two years, as it mentioned it would be launching and revising almost its entire lineup.
Apart from the upcoming 3 Series, BMW has finally given an official teaser of the next-generation X5. Obviously, we already have a good idea of what to expect as it has the same Neue Klasse design language first seen in the iX3 inside and out, just scaled up for the larger body size of the X5 platform.

More interestingly, BMW says that this will be the first model to offer five different drivetrain technologies.
So, that’s naturally battery electric, a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, gasoline, diesel, and most interestingly, hydrogen fuel cell, in the iX5 Hydrogen that’s touted to launch in 2028.

The iX5 Hydrogen has been in concept form since the G05 generation, with it capable of pushing out 401 horsepower and reaching 100kph in under six seconds. From just two 6kg hydrogen tanks, it is capable of driving up to 504km, and it can be refilled in just minutes, significantly faster than the fastest-charging EVs out there.

This will utilize the third-generation fuel cell system, which was interestingly developed in collaboration with Toyota, considering they have been pushing hard for hydrogen adoption in their part of the world.

And for those worried about the infrastructure, BMW is taking an active effort to scale up and expand the hydrogen refueling network with its HyMoS (Hydrogen Mobility at Scale) initiative that aims to support these ecosystems in cooperation with both industry and institutional partners, with a pilot phase starting in Germany and France.
