Nissan introduces the Ariya, a 100% electric crossover

The all-new EV should deliver driving excitement, confidence, comfort, and connectivity.

Nissan has officially taken the wraps off its first 100% electric crossover, the Ariya. With a 100% electric powertrain, the Ariya promises powerful acceleration and smooth, quiet operation. Drivers and passengers can relax and enjoy the ride thanks to autonomous driving technology, concierge-level assistance, seamless connectivity and a spacious, lounge-like interior.

The Ariya is the first major launch of the company after being hit by several issues or problems in the last few months to years. Nissan says the new electric crossover serves as a “key milestone” in the company’s four-year plan “to achieve sustainable growth, financial stability and profitability.”

The Nissan Ariya makes use of the company’s new design language, dubbed ‘Timeless Japanese Futurism.’ This gives this new EV a very striking exterior through the use of a distinctive Japanese approach.

“The Nissan Ariya is a truly beautiful and remarkable car,” Nissan Chief Operating Officer Ashwani Gupta said. “It enables you to go further, easier and in comfort. The Ariya is designed to impress, and to express what Nissan strives for – making our customers’ lives better.”

The Ariya also takes full advantage of the company’s new EV platform. Thanks to this, the designers of the car were able to create a flat floor. That plus the compact climate control components give the Ariya the most spacious cabin in its class. In addition, the lounge-like interior with Zero Gravity seats, makes the vehicle a comfortable and welcoming place to be inside of.

Powering the Nissan Ariya are choices of electric motors with four different outputs. Customers can choose from multiple configurations to meet their individual needs. These include two-wheel-drive and e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive versions, as well as two different battery sizes. Nissan says that the e-4ORCE all-wheel control system balances the powerful performance with all-weather capability. The system’s twin electric motors provide a balanced, predictable ride, with sports car-level power delivered in the blink of an eye.

The 2WD versions can be had with the choice of either a 65 or 95 kWh electric motor. The former produces 215 hp while the latter produces 239 hp. Both have a maximum torque of 300 Nm and a range of up to 450 km and 610 km, respectively. The all-wheel drive versions on the other hand can also be had with choices of either a 65 or 95 kWh electric motors. Output however is different as the former produces 335 hp and 560 Nm of torque while the latter and top-spec version produces 389 hp and 600 Nm of torque. Range is at up to 430 km and 580 km respectively. The top-spec option can also accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in just 5.1 seconds.

Nissan also says that the Ariya is their most technologically advanced car to date. It benefits from the company’s ProPILOT 2.0 advanced driver assistance system and the ProPILOT Remote Park and e-Pedal features. Also standard across the entire Ariya lineup is Nissan’s Safety Shield system. This safety suite includes Intelligent Around View Monitor, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Emergency Braking and Rear Automatic Emergency Braking technology.

The all-new Nissan Ariya is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in mid-2021. It will be priced at around 5 million Japanese yen (or around Php 2,300,000). Other markets like Europe, North America and China are expected to follow by the end of 2021. As to whether we’ll see it on Philippine shores, we should probably wait first for the Nissan Leaf which was already announced by Nissan Philippines to be launched anytime soon.
