The GAC GS8 HEV is confirmed to be launching in PH this March

When the GAC Motor brand relaunched in the Philippines in early 2023, it was headlined by the GS8 midsize SUV which helped kickstart the brand’s rejuvenated presence in our market. But since then, we all do know that the brand has gone quiet, until recently.

Now that it’s under new management once again, the brand wants to regain lost traction. One of the models that it thinks could support that is the GS8 HEV which has just been confirmed to be launching in the country very soon by GAC International Philippines.

The electrified version of the Chinese automaker’s flagship SUV offering will be the first of three models to be joining the brand’s new local lineup, previewed at the recent 2026 GAC Philippines Dealer Conference. The updated lineup already includes the Aion UT, Hyptec HT, Aion V, and Aion Y Plus; while the E8 and GN8 PHEV will also be coming.

Photos provided by GAC International Philippines show that it retains most of the design elements from the current GS8 that we get locally, but with a redesigned front grille which features larger openings, and a new set of 20-inch alloy wheels. The interior also retains most of its minimalist layout, but photos show that we’ll be getting a six-seater version with second row captain seats.

Most importantly, under the hood will still be a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, but this time paired with GAC’s Mega Wave THS hybrid system which was co-developed with Toyota. The company’s press release indicates a maximum output of only 54 horsepower (40kW) and 121Nm of torque.

Based on available information from other sources, that indicates only its rear electric motor output, and we’ll be getting the GS8 HEV in all-wheel drive (AWD). Its engine will produce 190 horsepower and 320Nm, while its front electric motor will be capable of 182 horsepower and 270Nm. The system will be mated to a CVT and a 1.6kWh nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery.

We can also expect features such as a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an Alpine sound system, leather and leatherette seat upholstery, faux suede door trim, and a panoramic sunroof, just to name a few.

Taking of orders for the new GAC GS8 HEV is expected to begin in March, with pricing and full specifications to be announced closer to its formal launch. Would you prefer this electrified GS8 over the regular turbocharged version?
